A note from Martha Faupel, Executive Director of
the Food Bank of East Alabama, pertaining to the Spring '07 food drive
campaign, which was themed STUFH 2007 - Feeding the Hungry
Children:
The time of year that food banks most need donations
coincides with the time of year that we typically get the fewest. As Anna
Quindlen says 'While the Christmas holidays make for heart-rending copy,
summer is really ground zero in the battle to keep kids fed.' Last year
17.5 million low-income children received free or reduced-price meals
through the National School Lunch Program, but unfortunately, just under
2 million of these same income-eligible children participated in a summer
feeding program. You can easily do the math to see the need. The timing
of the collection of food through STUFH is wonderful and has the direct
benefit of feeding hungry children.
