* After compiling
the number of donations, the citywide food drive
raised a total of the equivalent to 9,679 meals for New Yorkers
in need.
In New York City, one of the richest cities in
the world, approximately
1.3 million people, mainly women, children, the elderly, the disabled
and
the working poor, rely on soup kitchens and food pantries. A recent
survey shows that 48% (or half) of all New Yorkers are struggling
to put
food on the table. The economic downturn and extensive layoffs
have
severely impacted many more thousands of New York families who
never
before experienced food poverty and now, more and more middle
income
families need help. The Food Bank for New York City provides 300,000
meals daily at 1,000 programs throughout the five boroughs to
help feed
the hungry, yet food kitchens and pantries are now running out
of
sufficient resources to feed the ever-growing lines of the city’s
hungry.
In response to this crisis, university students
from Fordham, Columbia,
NYU, Marymount Manhattan, The New School, and St. John's are teaming
up to
help fight hunger in the city during the week of February 23rd
to March 1st. A
Kick-Off rally will be held on Wednesday morning, February 18th
at 8:30
a.m. at the West Side Campaign Against Hunger Food Pantry located
at the
Church of St Paul and St Andrews at the corner of West 86th St
and West
End Avenue. Bins will be provided for students who wish to make
donations of non-perishable, unopened boxes and cans of food and
a
virtual food drive will be accessed on www.foodbanknyc.org where
students will find an easy path to "Click for Hunger".
Every dollar
provides five meals so whether a student gives one dollar or five
dollars, each donation will make a real difference for hungry
New
Yorkers. Contact Dan Kahn, President of Students Team Up To Fight
Hunger
